THE INSIGHT

Even though the holiday season is celebrated the world over, not everyone has access to the most iconic symbol of holiday cheer – the Christmas tree.

But with new technology and innovations, this can easily be changed. By simply owning a smartphone anyone can have the chance to deck the halls or just about any space they want, with a bit of festive magic.

THE IDEA

Introducing Tree of Lights, the first ever virtual tree app that harnesses augmented reality to generate a unique Christmas tree in any space. Using a procedural algorithm, Tree of Lights can display a number of interactive trees in full 360º.

Keeping with the gifting spirit, AKQA collaborated with World Land Trust to donate one real tree for each virtual tree app downloaded.

IMPACT

More than just placing virtual trees in spaces where users wanted to add a touch of Christmas cheer, AKQA along with World Land Trust placed hundreds of real trees in natural spaces that need protecting.

CONCEPT ART

We created a set of trees, ideal for procedurally generated prototyping. The visual direction was focused on making each tree to look like a piece of abstract art.

PHYSICS simulations

We used Unity as our engine to generate infinite trees,negative gravity simulations allowed us tomagically generate each of our trees.
